Dog Sledding or Mushing is a sport that has been around for some time. So this summer I went to Alaska and booked a sled dog experience and helicopter ride. This tour included the chance to ride and "mush" with a true set of sled dogs on a glacier. This was something that I always thought of doing as I spend so much time with dogs.
The sheer power of the team of dogs pulling the sled and a few people was pretty amazing. I recorded most of the ride and it was an amazing experience.
This was a tour that is based out of Skagway, Alaska. It was one of the most amazing adventures I have ever done with dogs. The camp had over 200 dogs at the base. The dogs that pulled us will compete in the 2017 Iditarod in Alaska.
While our pets most likely are not as acclimated to the cold temperatures, sled dogs are completely used to living and working in the cold temperatures.
The musher uses commands that are from draft horses, so to turn they say Gee ("jee") and haw. They also use whoa to stop. I wish the team of dogs all the best luck in the upcoming races and can't wait to go mushing again!
